Borbulhas e dinheiro

5) MILLENNIUM CHAMPAGNE - Louis Roederer Cristal

What is it?

Bottle number 1,333 of a Methuselah of Louis Roederer Cristal 1990 champagne made to commemorate the millennium. Only 2,000 six-litre bottles were produced. Orders were taken in the mid-1990s for delivery in 1999.

What was it worth 10 years ago?

About £1,100.

What's it worth now?

£8,360, the highest price paid for a single bottle of champagne sold at auction.

Why has it taken off?

Richard Harvey, wine master at Bonhams' auction house, says: "You ordered the bottles in 1995 with the intention being that the champagne would be a perfect bottle to crack open in the millennium. Obviously some people did open it and some people didn't. Cristal is one of the great champagnes and because big bottles are rare it was one of the millennium investments that paid off."

Where's the market heading?

For a comeback. You can still find a few Methuselahs of Cristal 1990 millennium champagne. They're getting scarcer, so prices will rise.

And think back to before the 1990s. Buyers are lapping up vintage champagnes dating back to the 1950s. Consumed predominately by the British until recently, old champagne is now in demand across the world for its unique flavour. A bottle of Krug Clos du Mesnil 1979 sold last year for £462. Top names such as Dom Perignon and Louis Roederer Cristal from the 1960s and 1970s have been selling for nearly £200 a bottle.

For non-champagne drinkers, any first-growth Bordeaux wines are blue-chip investments: 1982 and 1996 were notable vintages A case of 1982 Chateau Mouton-Rothschild sold last year for more than £5,000 - five times its 1990 auction price. Looking ahead, 2005 was a good year, so get in early.
